WHY I COACH?I was one of the high school stars in Steve James's 1994 documentary "Hoop Dreams." I went on to play Division I basketball at New Mexico State and later returned to Marshall H.S. on Chicago's West Side as an assistant coach. I was driving my daughter to school on January 30, 2014, when two people shot at my car at a stoplight. I shielded my daughter from gunfire, but I was left paralyzed. I am the subject of a 2018 book, "All The Dreams We've Dreamed."
I now use my talent and skills to teach and inspire a young group of children at Children of Peace Catholic School, not just about basketball fundamentals but about life, its challenges, and how to persevere against all odds. |
